Me and my 77 Bay

« on: March 14, 2009, 04:21:37 PM »

Hello all. I'm currently trying to install a new accelerator cable in my 74 Super.
Back story: I removed the old cable because it seemed to be binding somewhere and no allowing the lever on the carb to return to the cam.

When I opened the new cable, I checked the length side-by-side with the old one; they were equal length.
When I fished in the new cable (with plenty of grease) I had to remove the end of the flexible guide tube from the rear end to get the cable through, then put it back on the metal tube.
Now it seems the cable isnt long enough.

I removed the flexible tube completely and cleaned it out as best I could; no change.
I stuck my camera up there and there is a hose clamp on the metal tube?

After searching on the Samba, it seems it is there to keep the metal tube from coming out? But the thread I found shows the clamp by the fan shroud, not on the back side by the transmission.

Any words of wisdom for this Bus driving guy?

Hey Eric!

When did you socre the 74?  I think I remember you telling me something about this car a while back.  But I've been too busy to remember.  Roll Eyes

As for you accelerator cable issues, I'm not sure what you are referring to when you are talking about a flexible guide tube.  I'd have to go blow the dust off the trusty orange Robert Bentley manual to be of service.  I can't picture the 74 in my mind.  It's been 9 years almost since I sold mine back in New York.  I forget how the IRS rear end is layed out in comparision to the swing axle rear end.  I've got my boss with me the next 2 days.  I'm going to be real short on time.  I'll try to dig out my manual tomorrow evening after my girls hit the sack.

Gotta run,

Hey Scott, I've had the bug for a while; it just hasnt been really running. I'm just now getting it together.

The flexible tube is #3 here:

I havent picked up a Bentley for the bug yet, I do have the Haynes manual, but it lacks in the photo department.

Alright, I made a couple adjustments as provided by keifernet on thesamba; the results:

Test One. Carb only, no cable attached:

All looks good there.

Test Two. Cable installed, pulled finger tight only.

Test Three. Cable installed, new barrel clamp, again finger tight

I took some time and lubed the crap out of the pedal. I pulled the cable out completely (again) and heavily regreased it.

Still not fixed...

My questions would be:

Does the barrel clamp fit loosely in the carb arm?

Is the hook connected to the correct side of the pedal?  Is there any binding at all as the cable enters the tunnel?

The barrel clamp seems to move freely in the arm.
I've tried hooking the cable to both sides of the pedal, with the same results.
I was unable to detect any binding through the tunnel.

I just did this on my 74 SB and I replaced the pedal mechanism. I too laid old and new cables side by side and they were identical. I used lithium grease on cable as I fed it through and problem I had was I used too much cable to attach to new pedal (roller type) so FWIW...
