I need a new RR fender and trunk lid for my 74 SB and have been told by a local SB specialist that I would be better off finding a clean parts car and doing that. Are the new ones not well made? Thank you for any help. I live in Riverside CA.

He is correct. Original German Parts are always better quality due to the fact that they are "original." The aftermarket parts vary in quality. Some are stamped from thinner materials, others are stamped with the wrong contours. So, when you have a OEM German fender on one side, and an aftermarket italian, mexican or brazilian fender on the other, you can see differences in the two sides. Sometimes it's the gap between the top of the tire and the rolled edge on the fender, other times it's the height of the tail lights. The good news in all of this is that Super Beetle parts are still readily available and can be had for a fair price. Scott Faivre P.S. This is my Super Beetle that I built back in 1994...

Have you tried any of the swap meets at the local VW events? Or Pomona?

no but just got a lead on a parts car from local VW mechanic. I am trying to make the car all German which is no easy (or cheap) task, as you know.

Hi kasesq.
As Scott mentioned, your best bet would definitely be from another car. There's is, however, a possibility that another car has after market parts on it. It's not to say that they are all bad, but the majority of after market parts like body panels aren't going to fit perfectly.
Post up some pics when you get the opportunity.

I hadn't thought about that...where would I look on a fender to see where it was made?

If it's already mounted on the vehicle, say, a fender, generally, the roll under the edge will let you know if it's a re-pop or not. If it's smooth, it's probably worth using. If it's got wrinkles in it from the press, then it's likely worth passing on.
If the fenders are not mounted, pick them up and give them a little shake. Alot of aftermarket goods use a fairly thinner gauge metal, and will wobble a little bit. Of the ones that i've seen and had my hands on, some of the italian fenders are almost indistinguishable from german fenders, with the exception of the roll around the wheel opening. They also have a little bit more weight to them than the other aftermarket items.
As for the trunk lid, that could be a tough find. After market probably don't fit for squat. Do you have one at all, or just a damaged one? If damaged, how bad? This is definitely a swap meet item. Most of the VW events in So Cal as well as the Pomona swaps have late model parts, and even a few folks i saw on my last trip down there, a ton of super parts.
Keep your eyes open on craigslist as well, parts come and go throughout the day. Always worth a shot and a search.

I have the hood but it has a sizeable dent in it - I am at the point where I think Im going to keep what I have and try to pound it out myself. Harbor Freight has a whole set of metal working tools for cheap so Ill give it a go. At least that way I know Ill have German parts all around.

Definitely not a bad idea to keep what you got. Scott is showing me a few things here and there on my '67 in regards to body work using the Harbor Freight set. Not a bad set. Give it a shot and see what you end up with. Still waitin' on those pictures, too. Kenney

Ahh, come on!
I have 2 cars (a '73 standard and a '67) that most certainly aren't presentable, but I posted them up.
Believe me, we all start somewhere. Unfortunately, both of my cars are still at the "starting point" even 6 years down the road. They're still my POSs and i love 'em.

My holdup has been trying to find a dist. that wouldn't hesitate when I speed up, so I found a company (oeveedub) that sells refurbished 34PICT3 AND the correct SVDA distributor to go with it. I have the dizzy but the carb is still weeks away from being shipped. When I got the car both boots at the end of the main intake manifold were cracked and leaking, and the old Brazilian carb wasnt even screwed down tight. With new gaskets and boots all around I think I have eliminated all vacuum leaks and (when it gets here) can actually adjust the carb to factory specs per the Bently manual. It is amazing to me how people neglect their VWs - even tho it isn't much to look at I care more about my bug than my Corolla.
