My 66 has some crap aftermarket outside door handles.  They fit fine and look decent, but they don't work very well with the stock door lock mechanism inside the door.  I'd love to have someone who is more familiar with these handles be able to point me in the right direction.  I started a topic like this one on the cal look forum a while ago, and got some pointers, but I haven't solved the problem yet.  There are at least 2 styles that I know of that were used in 66.

The first looks like the picture below and was available on 1964-1966 on cars here in the states:

The second type has a round push button, and I'm not sure of any company that has them in stock, or is offering reproductions.  This style is considered a one year only part for 1967's.  But they also appeared on late 66's too.

My cheap after market ones function for opening and closing the door, but won't allow me to lock the door.  Is there any door handle experts here?  Undecided

I do perform almost all my own bodywork, but it wouldn't be possible without "Wilson."  He's a very talented bodyman and a great teacher!  He showed me how to do the bodywork, and I provided the labor.  He also showed me how to shrink metal using an oxy-accetaline (sp?) torch.  I was making no progress with my propane torch. Grin  He also donated a few hours of his time to work on my "munched up" hood.  Besides his skills as a technician, he's also a great guy and a man I'm proud to call a good friend.

If you veiw the pictures in my gallery and click on my convertible or my 66, you'll be able to see pictures of Wilson teaching.   Grin

if you have the 66-67 round button type handles do you need the pin that is inside the spring replaced?they usually break off and handle does not function as designed. the pins can be replaced to make the handles function as original, but if the paddle is worn out -not much you can do.

Bill,
Is there a way to tell by VIN # or something which door handles you should have?  My car came to me with cheap crap aftermarket handles.  I'm not sure which it needs: the square button or the round button?  Either way, I'm still fighting with this stupid issue on my car.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
