Leaking Oil in Las Vegas

« on: March 20, 2008, 10:48:05 PM »

So, i've recently picked up some pop-put windows for my bug. Got 'em dirt cheap, too. $30 from a garage sale.

I got 'em complete with everything, including the dried up, wasted seals and and such. Things like the glass, hinges, the handle hinges, and frames are in pretty darn good shape. I plan to paint them to match the front window and vent window frames, which would be flat black with satin clear over them. I'm gonna be sanding the frames a bit to remove the plating and all that good junk this weekend.

I read a few posts around the web in regards to restoring these things, and how much of a pain it can be to get the handle hinge with new gaskets back in, not to mention the outer seals for the frames. Starting tomorrow, I plan to take pictures. Alot of 'em, and going over step-by-step how to assemble them, as well as removing the original rear 1/4 window glass.

I've purchased all of my gaskets, seals, hardware and everything I need for these from WCM. It wasn't cheap, but I really am impressed with the quality of the materials.

If anyone has any tips, advice, or have done this before and know something they care to share to save me a bit of a headache (ahem, Scott  Wink ) i'd greatly appreciate it. Maybe, with a little help, we can start making things like this into a Tech Article. Wouldn't want anything more than to help out the community and share all my knowledge.

Sounds like a great idea Kenny, but I'm headed to North Carolina for month on Monday.  When I redid my pop-outs on the 66, I replaced the outside seal only, and the seals on the button that goes through the glass to mount the hinge.  The inside seal between the glass and the frame I did not replace.  My seals came from Wolfsburg West, and you can't beat them.  WCM makes some great stuff too, and may last longer than mine because of the special rubber formulations they use.

On the outside seal, I just lubed it up with Armor All, and then a flat blade screwdriver to carefully press the seal into the frame all the way around.  It will test your hand stregnth and endurance. Cheesy  It took me about 1/2 per window to get them in.  Also, before you start, think about where your seal will be when you are done.  Some like them centered in the bottom of the window, I like them centered in the upright of the B pillar.  Wink

Feel free to make this a thread a "build up" type article, and when I return, I can collect the info, a headshot of you, and create it into a tech article for the main section.  I'd like to get a lot more tech articles going, but time is at a premium for me right now.

See you guys in a month!

Thanks for the info Scott. Enjoy your trip.

Hopefully this won't be too bad. I'm gonna, at least, strip off the plating, clean up some of the burrs, scratches and such, and get them painted this weekend. Gradually, as time allows, i'll piece them together over the course of next week and then install them next weekend.

See ya when you get back.

I guess I lost track of time getting things done on my Bug lately, but I do have an update!

I totally disassembled the pop-outs and started getting them cleaned up and ready for new seals, parts, etc.

Without further ado . . .

Maybe in the near future, i'll have them ready to toss on. Been super-ultra-mega busy with work and a new girlfriend, so the Bug's been neglected and un-driven for nearly 2 weeks. Updates to follow this weekend. If anyone has any questions about what i'm doing to what parts, feel free to ask!

Well I just got back from Chicago, and I checked in.  I know that I could count on Kenny to put up something good.  You really took those pop outs apart!  They're going to be like new once you're done with them.  Progress looks good.  One warning though, to get seals between the frames and the glass back together is supposedly quite an effort.  You got the good stuff though, so I look forward to seeing your progress.

Good Luck!
