I'm not sure if it's good or not.  What brand is it?  What's the warranty on the starter?  Does it include that little bushing that supports the end of the starter?

FYI, I think that the engine needs to come out to remove and replace that bushing.  I've never replaced one, but you might need an extractor tool to get that out.  Maybe a brass drift and a large mallet would work, but you don't want to get it cocked.  You'll damage the case.  Again, I yield to Yoda's experience on this.  Wink

Where in AZ are you?  Have you got any local VW shops you can call?

Hello guys
To replace the brass bush, it is possable to do in the car it is a bit of a fiddle saying that i've only done it on a '71 bay type 2 dont now if there more room than a bug.I used a thin chisele to split the bush this makes the bush loose on its recess.  then used a hook to pull the bush out .If the bush breaks up and litte bits fall inside the bell housing gravity says they will end up at the bottom out of the way.Fitting the new bush i used a socket slightly smaller than the outter diameter of the bush and a socket extension which gave me access to see what i was doing to keep the bush straight  and tapped the new bush home. The trick is to start the bush without droping it inside the bell housing[may have started the bush just with the extension and no socket as the bush fitted over the 3/8drive extension male end, it's been a while since i have had to change that bush cannot remember without seeing it in the car]Hey ididn't say it was easy and mechanic haves have extra knuckel and elbow joints.GOOD LUCK MATEY  yoda.....
P.S whats bueno??? Embarrassed Embarrassed

Hey I got The Starter off today and sure as heck its no bueno.

bueno = "good" in Spanish.  Here in the SW of the USA (Arizona, Nevada, Southern California) we have a large Spanish speaking population.  It spills over into our "lingo".  Grin

I got the remanufactured auto stick starter here in Vegas from Pep Boys and only paid like $40 or less for it. I was shocked. Has held up fine so far.
