You'll need a buddy to turn the nut on the engine side, and unbolt the starter.  Then take the nut off of the stud and pull it out.  Take the negative terminal off of your battery before you do this.

Once you get it out, take it over to your local autozone or checker store and they'll test it for free.  You'll be able to diagnose it to the starter or the solenoid.

Try your local VW shops for the Bosch SR15 starter.  If they don't have what you need, click the link below and order it from CIP1.com.  You'll help support German-Pride if you do!  Wink

I don't consider myself an "old guy" at only 33 years of age, but "In my day we didn't have these fancy internet sites!  We had books!" Grin  I just wish I had the power of the internet when I was a kid new to the VW's.

Ask away.  I know I've asked a million questions to others.  It's the only way to learn!  I don't claim to have all the answers.  But I know many people that do!  Tongue

BTW, have you bought this book yet?  It was my (and many others) bible when it came to learning how to work on these cars.  The best $30 I ever spent!

YO Steve
You didn't say what your fault was with the starter motor. If it's turning over slow and /or making nasty noises check the brass bush that supports the end of the pinion,[the brass bit in the picture Scott posted].Its acesseable through the starter motor hole in the transmision. And can be renewed without removing the engine. If thats broken up it can give a lazy starter motor type of fault. End up changing mine every couple if years. It's worth replacing it anyway if you end up renewing the starter.

i dont know forsure if its the starter or the solinoid but when i turn the key i can hear the ignition click but the motor doesnt turn.  the engine isnt seized and the battery is charged so i read further in the repair manuel that the last bet would be to pull the starter..so i guess thats what i am going to do..  anything u can think of that i didnt list that may be the problem????i am all ears.

thanks for your imput yoda

The "click" that you are hearing when you turn the key to its first position is the cut off valve on the carburetor.  If when you turn it to the full "momentary" position that should engage the starter.  Another thing that can happen with worn starters and solenoids is that they can stick.  If you've got a heavy rubber mallet, climb under the car and give a couple of firm taps on the side of the starter.

Just out of curriosity...  Have you tried to pop start the car?

I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable about the autostick cars.  (I've only worked on the Brakes on one of them in the early 90's.)  This one might be best answered by Yoda.  I think I remember him telling me he is a professional mechanic.

I say yank that starter and haul it over to autozone. Wink

I've got them listed in the classified section.  You can view that classified ad by clicking here.  Thanks for asking!  I'm hoping that more people will start taking advantage of that FREE service here on German-Pride.  Clean out your garages and sell some parts guys!  <Shameless Plug for the GP Classifieds!> Grin

I might have a few colored ones left.  But most of them are white to put on your 1/4 rear windows.
